I bought a Cambridge kit off of another pen maker and when I opened the package last night I saw that the silver on the cap had a thick haze with fingerprints. I almost though maybe the cap was tried in a pen and had CA on it and was put back in the bag where the CA cured. I did not see any CA though.

So I am not sure what the residue is but I need to get it off. I also noticed there are a couple of minor scratches on the silver.

I guess my question is around the material. Does anyone know if the sterling silver is plated? Is the plating thin? In other words will I damage it by taking it to my buffer?

Any other ideas to clean it? Thanks!

All the silver components I have used -- except special order parts that are silver all the way through and cost lots of $$$ - were plated and thin plating with an epoxy coating

Unless you have an extreamly fine touch with the buffer, you will discover the underlying metal pretty fast.

The lightest abrasives I use are Bar Keepers friend (very mild abrasive with Oxylic Acid)

and

Bon Ami -- Feldspar and other stuff
