Okay, newbie questions, bear with me. How do I know which pen kits work with which casings? Or are all used with a slim line kit? And if so, how does one size the end of the casing to match the pen/pencil tip? Anybody ever done something with short (pistol) casings??

Thanks!!

Greg it depends on which shell casing you use.
You can mic the end of the shell casing, and mic the largest part of the nib where it comes in contact with the casing to get a good fit.
I like the 308 casings...or the 30-30. Because the brass tubes from the slimline kits fit real good for length.
Also I can get brass or nickel in the 308...a lot of the others you are limited to brass.
Some use the euro style pen kits.
To make a pencil it is a little different..and you need to use a longer tube.
If you go with the slimline pen kit..then there is a slimline pencil kit.
Same applies with the euro style kits.
A lot of it is a matter of preference.
Several make them. And i'm sure you will get some more suggestions.

As for the pistol casings. You can do them also.
You just have to make a piece of wood or something to use with it. I turn a small tenon and glue it in the inside of the shell casing. Cut the length accordingly.
