Well my son in law came home from Afghanistan this last July for 2 weeks to see his dad that has terminal Cancer.
Any way he asked me to make him a bullet pen which I did and back to Afghanistan he went. While over there asked me to make and send him an antler pen.. no biggy.
I asked him if he could bring me back some .50 cal shells that they had fired and laying around.

Then on his way home 2 weeks ago they wouldnt let him keep the .50 brass.. no biggy.
But they also wouldnt let him keep his bullet pen 30.06 once shot pen. They took it and threw it in the trash.. told him couldnt go.

either they wanted his pen and told him that or its a waist sending a bullet pen to someone in the service in Afghanistan.

He should have known that was going to happen.

"No Brass No ammo" is a mantra for any branch of the service.

You cannot keep the empty brass for any reason, not even to make a souvenir or keepsake.

What I find odd is when buddies sent my stuff home after I got medevacced the mail guys went through it piece by piece. Took out a few items but left things like, Silver goblets with Republican guard seal engraved and a nice heavy silver platter with Palace Baghdad seal in the middle of it.

Sorry to hear your story. To ad to that I am now sorry I donated the bullet pens to woodcraft for the troops sounds like I wasted my time $$ and wood crafts kits and efferots. Sad to hear. Thanks for the update.

AND you don't attempt to carry a bullet case pen on a commercial airline either.

Oddly enough, about two years ago I was bringing my assorted pens with me to show some coworkers at a business convention. For the convention, we were flying to some place nicer than Minnesota in Feb. So, there I am, standing in line. That's when I realized that I had both bullet pens and 50 cal pens in my pen case in my carry-on.

However, never got stopped or anything. Got on the plane no problem.

I think this may be an isolated case or a problem with one of the inspectors. I donated 6 bullet pens to troops leaving for Irag several years ago and they had no problems either leaving or coming back.

I've had a casing pen go through the xray with out questions on a more than a few occassions but had to disassemble a baron to show that it was actually a pen and not a weapon in Detroit.

I work for a County Government. I actually got into an argument with a Deputy Sheriff at the court house Because of a 30.06/ antler pen. I even took it apart an showed him how it was made. Long story short, he was an idiot and I was escorted to my County vehicle to be sure I put it in the truck before returning. I was kindly asked after several more trips to the court house, to please stop greeting him as " Morning Dip ?"

But Phil, we're talking Detroit here some of those fools can stab you with a lead pencil. Crap, I hope there aren't any Al-Qaeda pen turners here.
