I have bought quite a few pieces of 1.5 to 2 inch square pieces of butt wood from cue components in florida. Depending on the wood you can get an 18 inch or 2 foot long piece for $35 on up, depending on the wood.

I cut it to 1.5 inch or 2 inch lengths and use it for bottle stopper blanks. You might want to check it out.

I got a great deal on 12 or so pieces of this stuff off E-bay once. It is beautiful wood, mine was rose wood. You can make all kinds of stuff from it. I made handles for turning tools and handles for this set of screwdrivers. I'd like to get more, thanks for posting. I'm wondering how their "Speed Seal II" would work for pens...

I've never tried the speed seal. But i do buy the colored veneers to use in segmenting blanks. They work great.
