I'm going to try dyeing wood a few different colors, cutting them into thin strips then glue them in alternate colors.

What wood accepts dyes the best? Birch????

Also, should I add wood hardener to the dye before I turn on the vaccuum?

Thanks for any and all advice.

You can put dye on sanded wood. Then finish it. But if you want it to be dyed throughout the wood. I would get some cactus juice and add alumilite dye to the mix and then vacuum it.

Birch (dymondwood), poplar and boxelder burl. All should be dyed in a vacuum. See Curtis' demo on dying /stabilizing.

I like dying Spalted Maple and Buckeye Burl. You don't really have to vacuum them to get the dye to take. I have dyed many blanks using Cactus Juice and dye and letting the blank sit in the dye for several days. You can also get it to wick up the wood by setting it in the dye on end for several days. Then you have to cook them to set the cactus juice up. Lots of possibilities and creativity...
