Baron defective black plastic trim ring

After assembly I found the plastic trim ring of the Baron has a brass colour about one third of the the ring. Not sure if I did something - no buffing. If the ring is plastic where did the brass come from? It looks like the paint has flaked off. Has anyone experienced this? Sorry the photo is not very good.
