I have a few 6/4 boards of Lyptus left over from a flatwork project. I have not tried to make a pen out of it yet. Has anyone turned it, if so, how goes it? I heard that oak is not one to turn for pens ( I tried it and it is not-so-good).

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, I have and it turns well(lyptus). Have not used much since the grain is rather plain and unexciting.

Personally I like white oak since it has a great grain and is very much under appreciated amongst the pen turners.JMO

Peter, Thanks. I will spin some this week and see how it looks. About the white oak, I have a little quartersawn that I might try. The ray flecks might look like lacewood when turned and finished.

Thanks again,
Dave
