I just returned from Cancun and was fortunate to purchase cut offs called Ciricote grown in the Yucutan peninsula. The price was amazing for me and seemed to greatly please the seller. The wood is dense and if I took all of what was offered I could have filled a suitcase, but might not have been able to afford the airline charge.

I plan to make pens and "cedar plug" fishing lures with it. I usually use CA for pens and BLO/CA for the "cedar plugs".

Suggestions?
Cautions?

It is an oily wood and looks similar to bocote. Wipe down with acetone before applying finish. The Ziricote wood I use is more black and has deep grain. It is a beautiful wood. I put it right up there with Rosewoods. I love exotic woods.

You got a good taste in bikes. Had 285,000 on mine before I switched to Guzzi.

Here are a few of the boards. The wood bears the seller's pencil label indicating Ciricote and it may be that species; I bought it because it was interesting and was sourced from the Yucatan peninsula. It is very dense!

If not, let me know your identification.

There were two pieces of another wood that had "red heart-like" sections so I made room for those also. Identity?

A wood find in Costa Rica

My last trip to Costa Rica allowed me to buy these pieces of Guancaste Wood, the national wood of Costa Rica (I was told). The were 8/4 40"x 18" and working with them produced the most hazardous dust I have ever encountered, but a very pretty tackle box for me.

I have been able to find Mexican Parota which is said to be the same wood, but I find it far more blond with much more dignified grain than the Costa Rican Guanacaste. In sunlight, fishing on the ocean where this box should be, this box turns heads over and over again.

I hope to have an opportunity to shop for wood in some exotic place again.
