Last night I was turning a Cambridge pen out of red morrell burl. As you may know on a Cambridge the material gets thin, really thin. Well I guess I should have suspected it but the burl shattered once I got down to about where I wanted to go. Is there a way to avoid this? I am thinking, get it about half way and sand it down the rest, but thats a lot of sanding. Any advice?

Sanding is an attitude for me! Most of mine are sanded the last mm or at least the last .5mm. (I do have one design that I don't sand, but it is not with burl.)

A way around the delicate burls is to turn a small amount, soak it with CA, turn down a little more, soak with CA.

use thin ca inside the drilled hole..let soak in..then when you are turning later the ca will have soaked "out" thus lessing blowout
