Another center-band Q

In many of the pen pics I see, the center-band has been eliminated from a kit that comes with the center-band. At least in the pictures, the lower barrel seems to be recessed in the upper barrel, as it would be if the center-band were used (eg, European 7mm kit). My question is, if the lower barrel is actually recessed, how is that done?

The upper barrel has a hole in it that is at least the diameter of the lower barrel.

I use a slightly different method. The upper barrel has a slight taper to it. I use drill bit that is almost the diameter of the upper barrel. The lower barrel has the same taper on the edge.

At what stage is the upper barrel drilled?

Another thing that I have seen done is to modify a barrel trimmer. You need to file away part of each cutter so that when you trim that end it also cuts a recess.
