Anger got the best of me

I had a very touch acrylic blank "in lace acrilyster". I turn these all the time, over 100, but this one chipped out noo matter what I did. It eventually chipped to the tube. I ended up taking my carbide tool and banging it on the acrylic and ended up messing up my headstock. The headstock arbor is now bent.

Oh man I feel so stupid even admitting I did it out of anger but the truth is always best.

there's nowhere near chance that I can correct to line up back to center. And when I turn it on it makes horrible noises in the headstock when it spins.

What do I do? How hard it it is possible to get a replacement part and reassemble my jet1014 back to perfect alignment, luckily I'm going away for a week. So I can order this and have it shipped to the house.

The tapper and the threads are bent. Only the headstock was effected. I had a dead center in the headstock.

Suggestions? Cheapest way to fix?

Ethan; the headstock bearings are readily available from many places. Search for "head stock bearings jet 1014" here on the site and you should find the numbers. I would try this first.

Not sure about the headstock spindle. This would have to come from Jet. A custom built part would be very expensive.

I would be tempted to check out the bearing first as well. Hard to imagine the whole spindle bending, even with a whack! Hate to say but I have bent a mandrel letting frustration get the better of me. It happens.

Ethan, sanding or trimming off those sharp corners on that inlace will greatly reduce the chipping and catching the tool.

having a Jet 1014 -- I am a bit skeptical that you were able to bend the headstock shaft. That is a lot of steel to distort, and my carbide tools are not especially massive and hammer like.

Mashing up the threads and trashing a mandrel sounds very believable.

Threads can be cleaned up with small files. Threads on a wood lathe are on the loose side until set against the flat on the headstock face behind the threads. Morse tapers can be cleaned up with a finish MT2 reamer.

Bearings may have been affected, but that will show up with the ear and hand (vibration in the headstock).

All the above is to say, take time and check carefully before deciding to replace the spindle (and bearings while it it torn down).

I'm assuming you did this before turning any new blanks you may have recently received.

On the plus side, I don't see how you could have bent the spindle. I have to agree that it sounds like a bearing issue to me. It might be as simple as just reseating the bearing. But that's just a guess too.

Are you getting these odd noises with a bare headstock (i.e. nothing mounted in or to the headstock)? Just trying to be sure what is the source of problem, since you mentioned bending the arbor, which is commonly referring to something you add to the headstock.

when I hit the pen blank, it was between centers a dead center and a live center. I have left the live center and the dead center in so that you can see how much the headstock wobbles. you can also hear the weird sound it is making and see even right above the threads where it goes into the front of the headstock that it is not aligned or spinning on center.

Bend in headstock or just bearings?: https://youtu.be/REEarGE6wv4

Difficult to see what is up even with the video. I have called powermatic which is also jet with some issues with my lathe. They were most helpful? Most likely when they see your nice video they will tell you what is wrong how to fix it and what the parts will cost. Let us know how it all comes out.

I finally got to taking the headstock apart. I put the spindle between centers on my Nova comet II. You can't see it in the pictures but the spindle is definitely bent.

it sounded like from reading other internet posts that I should replace the bearings while I'm at it. Is Jet the only place to get the spindle?

If you cannot get the spindle replaced, a machine shop may be able to "straighten" the spindle. Any place that sells bearings should have these on hand or be able to order them in a few days. Look for belt / industrial suppliers. An electric motor shop should be able to tell you where they get bearings locally.

I ordered all the parts from ereplacementparts.com.

yes the bearings we're 25-34 each but I don't have time to run to stores trying to find the exact bearings.

I think my old bearings were fine but put new ones on and a brand new dead and live center to check the alignment.

Do new bearings need to break in? I did notice that the spindle stops almost instantly when the motor turns off. Compared to my Nova and my old jet minis the spindle spins less free, even when spun by hand. Havnt turned anything on it yet.

Is there a way to know if the old bearings are bad or still good?
