Is there any 'rule-of-thumb' for which way to lay out this kind of pattern?
I think I want to utilize the light colored end but cannot decide to put it on the cap end or the tip end.
I have a gold baron that I think would look good with this blank.

I suppose either way would look good.

Any suggestions?

No rule. I generally try to put the best figure on the cap, but high contrast zones on the lower barrel. But it's really a pen-by-pen decision depending on the final shape and hardware.

You asked so I would try to cut the light sap wood away and not use it. I think it distract from the burl..

Thanks all.
The sapwood seems to be as hard and stable as the rest. It is a stabilized blank.
I think I'll put the sap on the cap!
