So I am very new to pen turning and need some advice.

I attempted to make some segmented pieces but they came apart when drilling them. The fist one was corian. It just came apart at the glue joints. The I tried some purple heart with acrylic. Same thing.

I was using a 5 minute epoxy but am seeing that ca glue seems to be a common denominator with members. Does the ca work with all materials? Is that the glue I should be using? Any advice on this?

Thanks in advance!!

I think you'll have problems with any glue that has trouble with heat.
Drilling generates lots of heat, and it will cause some glues to fail.
CA is one of them. I'd have used epoxy myself, as that's what the
Corian glue is. But then, they don't usually drill it across a glue joint
like we do for segmenting.

You might try drilling in steps, starting with a smaller bit. And don't
try to drill too fast. Don't try to get through it in one shot. The drill
bit will do it, but the glue might not hold. Try backing out after 1/4"
and letting the bit cool, see if that helps. Squirting water in the hole
should help cool things down, too.

While this may be a result of the adhesive, you don't mention prepping the pieces. If the two mating surfaces are not flat, they wll fall apart when drilled.

First make certain they are sanded flat and meet flat, then CA works GREAT on corian. And most woods. Very oily woods can cause problems with any method.

Hope this helps

When I glue up pieces of corian, I use thin CA, be sure that you work real fast because it will bond quick. Then clamp them for several minutes. Be sure to glue shinny side to shinny side.

I have been glueing two ,1 in. pieces face to face after a light sanding without having any problem . I made one by glueing a1/2" cap on each end with a white plastic spacer between the pieces It made a real sharp cigar. I use CA glue for all my glueing..... i clamp mine and let set overnight
