7.62 is a NATO round. Should be equal to .308 or 30.06. Woodturningz (main page) has a package of 10 inch 7mm tubes. The .308 is longer than the standard brass tube in a 7mm kit.

7.62mm is basically just another way of saying 30 caliber. There are several different cartridges made in the world designated 7.62Xwhatever. The 7.62 is what is used in the AK47. Most are .366" at the neck while 'American' standards for .30 cal. are .343. Short answer: Yes. Do use for pens. If the ones offered you are the 'Russian' version, you may have a different rim to contend with. The appearance will be different. Up to you whether to leave alone or, somehow grind off.

Bruce,
I have lots of 7.62 rounds pulled from US arsenals. Most of them are same length as the 308 while some are the same length as the 30-06. Aren't both of these referred to as NATO rounds? As Frank pointed out, the military 30 cal rounds are designated by 7.62x__ where the blank space is the length of the casing in mm. I thought that there is more than 1 length for the 7.62 NATO rounds. If I am wrong, could you point me to someplace where I could learn more about the different designations?

I have cases of 7.62 x 39 ammo sitting here. If you want I can go and blow a bunch off and send you the casings. It really wouldn't be a problem, in fact I would enjoy it once it warms up a little. These are used for the AK-47 and the SKS rifles, along with the MAK and the list goes on and on. They also work in certain custom pistols.

7.62 X 51 is the NATO cartridge. It's the military version of the 308 Winchester. The 30-06 cartridge has never been a NATO standard and is longer than the 308 by quite a bit.

Shoudn't be a problem. 7.62mm is the same as .308 and I have made lots of .308 cartridge pens.
