The Zodiac (mostly purple) is an old limb I think was from a Crab Apple, and the Elegant Beauty is from the "root ball" (that's what I call it) of an Osage Orange. By root ball I mean the gnarl that's just under ground below the trunk. This small tree (four inch diameter trunk) had died and tipped over, so the root ball was exposed and easy to get at. Now the buckthorn I dug up the other day... not so easy... that'll be another post eventually. These are to be VIP gifts for a local Historical Society.

The process I used was for the purple one was the same for this pen:

From tree to pen...

other than I went an hour vs 15 minutes vacuuming in the purple dye that was half the strength of the earlier pen. The wood was from the same branch, though perhaps a less interesting section of wood.
