So, here's the skinny: An attempt at a nap failed miserably, and History Channel was not as soothing as it should have been. I decided to try one more food coloring pen. I went for purple to make my oldest kid happy. Turns out red+blue=BLACK. And it was UGLY with a few coats of thin CA on it. I took the gouge out and went to work cutting it back to bare wood to use a different color. I heard the basement door open, so I stopped for a second to see who it was. When I looked at the lathe, I had this on the mandrel, much to my surprise. Figured I'd take the win graciously and finish it. I know people are probably tired of seeing these things, and I was planning on not posting another one today until this happened. It's some kind of burl I had in the box o' blanks, and the dark areas are all end grain that REALLY soaked the dye up.

So, did you thank whoever interrupted you? You really should. Nice result.

No, but I did make Dad walk over and take a look. I think I may need to find more random burl scraps and see if this can be replicated at all. Too good to pass up.

Just do not change your craftsmanship. That is what won me over on this baby.
