I've had the idea for this pen floating around in my head for over five years. Finally made it happen. I stayed at a the Hard Rock Casino and hotel in Vegas once. Down on the casino floor they have a bunch of historical musical exhibits showcasing things like costumes and instruments of famous musicians. Anyway I seen this black guitar that had what looked like pearl inlays. It looked sharp on the guitar. Here is my attempt to replicate the look on a pen.

Here are a few other pens I've made since the last time I posted.

On the first pen, I was just messing around. It was going to be a solid black upper barrel, but then I thought I would add an orange ring to tie it to the bottom barrel. Once I decide to add a ring I thought I would make it the same thickness as the center band to get a mirrored look. I'm not sure I like how it came out. It looked better in my head. As it stands it looks more like I tried to fix an oops. Maybe if I had made the ring a little thinner.....

Fabulous job on the black pearl pen!! At what point in the process did you insert the " pearl " into the blank?

I am with you on the orange ring. Fit and finish on all these pens is stellar!

Nice to see you haven't lost your touch for pens! Now I'm motivated to make a pen this weekend. Too bad I have to finish mowing the lawn this afternoon or I would get started right away. Tomorrow.....

Derek nice execution but I wish your pictures weren't so dark.

Ed I'll take your lawn mowing any day over clearing the snow we are starting to get.

Love the pearl idea. I need to incorporate this in some manner. Thanks for showing those well made pens.

All very nice, especially the black and pearl.

Beauties!

Nice pens. The local attitude toward snow around here is, "The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away,"

Thanks for the kind words, fellas!

The "pearl" is just white acrylic with some pearlescents. I drilled the two different sized holes in the black blank and then turned the white pegs and inserted them. Then I drilled the hole for the tube, cut it to length, put it on the lathe and turned it.

You're absolutely right. It's been so long since I turned a pen, I forgot what settings I used on my camera. The pictures looked lighter on the display on the camera, but when I pulled them over to the computer they were darker. I'll try and adjust that. I might even reshoot the black pen for you.

Lovely work, Derek !!!

Sure, it only took me about 5 years to do a 2 sided on, The four sided one should be ready in about 2023!
