A weave or twist inlay in an Elegant Beauty.
The blank was created from a maple core with inlays. The maple core was cut to an accurate hexagon. Then the groves for the inlays were cut on a CNC router on each face, in sets obviously as they over lap. Second thumbnail shows the router and fixture setup. Next is the form for shaping the inlays (shown in tn 5). The inlays are 3 layers of veneer glued with Titebond. They are sliced into strips and cut to length. Then steamed over boiling water for about 30 secs to soften them so they can be inserted into the form to cool and dry. The inlays were glued in with medium CA. After each set the excess was sanded flush with the face and the next set of groves were routed, etc. until all were in.
Tn 4 shows the blank then turned round to 5/8 " between centers. Subsequently drilled using a collet chuck. Had a little fracture in the backend that was not in the collet, but was easily repaired.
And the pen is the rest of the story!
BTW the groves were cut with a 1/16 " endmill and the inlay stripes are about .060 " thick.
