A few month's a good friend Mark James figured out how to make this blank. We always have Waffle House when we get together. I told Mark he should make a blank that matched the interior of Waffle House. So this was the blank he came up with.

I spent the last 4 days in Medina Ohio at his house. I managed to make a few blanks, but learned the process he uses.

This is Yellowheart and Ebony. This blank has 37 piece's all cut by hand. Finish is 5 coats of thin flex ca

We did not get everyone's blank done. I had prepared Ernie's ahead of the meeting as this was his idea. I showed Stonepecker how to do the sanding, and he made his own, start to finish, but will do the turning at home. Chuck's and a fourth is mostly done.

The yellowheart sanded better than any other wood I have tried so far for the triangles; at least at this size (.125" on the hypotenuse). And the ebony did not bleed into the yellowheart during sanding. Actually a cool color scheme. Just need to keep a firm hand on the pen when "fine dining" at Waffle House...

Looks great !!!

But there's gotta be more than 37 pieces there ... I counted 26, I think, from the one side, and not counting the big huge lateral pieces, the top and bottom, or the long thin separator strips. I counted each square as one piece. But it just dawned on me that the squares probably go through from one side to the other. Maybe the triangles do also.

Edit: Recounted ( as in Florida ! )on that basis and came up with 33 pieces overall.

20 yellow heart triangles. 9 ebony diamonds. 4 more pieces of yellowheart. 3 ebony veneers. So 36 total plus tube.

Light touches with a razor sharp scraper on a fast turning lathe will do well, prevent sanding dust, and leave a clean segmented blank. It will also take sanding dust off if one does decide to sand. But this is where a super sharp scraper shines: NO BLEED.

Beautiful blank! I wish I was in your territory! I am jealous of all of you who can get together like that!

Mark;

Past segmented vessels that I used Padauk and Holly for the build, to control the bleed I chose to Stabilized the Padauk and Holly before the last drum sanding of the timber to size and then cut the pieces, sure helps a lot.

And a partridge in a pear tree! :musical-note:
Creative, innovative, and downright nice all at the same time! My complements!
