Interesting thing to note here.

Banksia victoriae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is the name of one species of this pod. While I am not sure what species George uses I felt this combo went well together.

Hi Ed,

I have actually mentioned a couple of times, the specific name of the species of the Bankias I have in my front garden, I'm not surprised that you don't remember, as I couldn't find as easily as I thought, the posts where I gave that information neither so, no big drama however, and for educational purposes and answering your question, the species of Banksia I have and the ones that produce the pods that are used to make the blanks you used on your tests and this pen is, Banksia praemorsa Andrews: FloraBase: Flora of Western Australia

Strange enough, this Banksia is native of Western Australia, and I'm in South Australia, something that is quite common in between States, as people bring what they like to their new locations and plants such as Banksias are very plurifered all over Australia, with hundreds of species varieties...!

Now that I got that sorted, I have to say that I don't remember to have seen that kit before, I can only see how handy will be to have a kit with 2 so short barrels, not my type of kit but a very interesting one, indeed.

I can also see that you improved considerably the "camouflage" of the brass tube, the background is quite good and clear, I like what you done, congrats.

I apologise if I may have looked, a bit too critical to you however, I don't hide the fact that, in my view, my criticism level is based/proportional to the skill I believe the turner has or should have, from previous work so, would be correct to say that, I expect more from some, than from others...!

The other aspect to consider is that, as a blank maker, I'm always looking for the best possible work, preformed with my blanks, particularly those that are a much higher challenge, how far can one got with them...??? That's always a question in my mind, as you would understand...!:biggrin:

Have these blanks reached their full potential, already...??? I think not...!:)

Cheers
George

It's all good. I did not want to dig up the posting and I do recall you posting it :)

It's all good about critical thinking. It encourages others to break out of the box and do better. It also helps us to obtain angles that we are blind to and in the end we become better people by it.

This is a Victorian pen kit by PSI, it's new as in just past the first 700 production run. The tubes are somewhat 'short' and it's a souped up bling-a-fied cigar :) Also worth noting is the wall thickness on the blanks are fairly thick which makes it better in many regards but also adds weight (a few grams over that of a full size statesman non-postable). Overall I think they make good decor but likely not something that I would want to tote around in my pocket every day. Perhaps a very good desk pen on a stand or to help show off something upscale and classy.

Also worth noting is my photography seems to taken another level with some recent additions and changes I have made. I am still working on a better setup and perhaps some day I can take those images that I envision.

An Absolute Stunner,
Congratulations Ed on your Kit Selection of the Victorian, to match the Blank.
Your Fit and Finish, as well as the close up Micro Photographs, represents Superb Craftsmanship.
Congratulations also to George, for an Outstanding Blank.
His persistance to push the boundries, and adjust methods, materials and techniques, to overcome difficulties is Masterful.
Looking at these Micro Photographs conjures up all sorts of visions in ones mind, just like staring into the coals or embers of a fire.
Images appear, these blanks may look to contain, a dissection of a Reptilian creature from another Planet, or the pictures of Body Organs via a Microscope, or just Nature at it's Magnificent Best.
Regardless, This Kit and Blank has combined to Deliver a Most Spectacular Pen.
I am in Awe.
Brian.

Incredible match between blank and kit... Oh yea; a bit of skill with the turning and finishing :). I admire this!

Ed: What camera/lens/settings did you use. I'm just starting and trying to learn. Thanks.

(Want to get better.. Talk to those better than you)

The camera I use is a Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP, DS126151.
The lens I use is a Sigma 50mm 1:1 macro lens.

I went more into the setup that I use here.

Thank you! I read back from thread to thread. Very helpful. I appreciate you documenting the technicals so others may come close. I am glad you know your previous threads so... we can benefit with less investigatory work!

Beware.. in 35 years I may rival your pics... NOT.

(I bought a used Canon Rebel T2i at Christmas, and just ordered the EFS 60MM f2.8 lens.)

Thanks for sharing and teaching.

Hell, you making me dizzy by trying to rotate my head to the position you took the pic, that upside down trick is crazy..!:biggrin:

One thing is for sure, you can't hide anything on those sort of pics...!

Cheers
