Found a couple of cutting boards at the thrift store made of oak, walnut, cocobolo, maple and laminated oak/maple. Top pen is the laminate, next with cocobolo, with maple & with walnut. The laminate has great chatoyance on the side grain. The two top pens use the gunmetal slimline pen kits from Woodturningz which I really like.

Also found a piece of strange wood, smells like walnut but doesn't look much like it.

I guess I should head down to the local Salvation Army and see what is in stock [:D] Very nice job on the pens Darrell. I like the transitions to the different woods. Anthony

Thats a great way of re-cycling wood . Something I would have never thought of , gotta start opening my mind more and taking a closer look at things to see what the possible outcomes could be !!

Darrell how hard does it seem to you. I was going to make a guess but then I remembered someone that would have a much greater chance of getting the answer. David Borek is the most knowledgeable person that I know cencerning wood. I would try emailing him.

The wood seemed a trifle harder than walnut, also the grain doesn't have the openess of walnut. And the dark heartwood (?) has a sort of golden chatoyance unlike walnut.
