The long one out of Tulipwood surrounds a artists pencil made in Germany, probably a Pentel ? I cut the original plastic housing down on the lathe and then drill this puppy out and inserted the pencil into the new blank.
The second one shows the ill fated attempt to dye 1790 Hickory with Crystal Lite. Some of the red managed to show up in the veins.
The third is Box Elder Burl, stabilized with red.

Nice work.

Very nice adpatation on the pencil. That is actully called a "lead holder" in the architectural and drafing business (before autocad). The holder can use a variety of lead types.

I may give that a try, since I have a bunch of them laying around the house.

Let me know what you used for a drill. I cut the pen down to .300mm and then found a drill bit about the same size. I had to drill in from both ends which was tricky and not quite as precise as it should have been.
