My boss is getting transfered to supervise another department. All the guys in my department chipped in and I made a pen for him. I decided on a Triton. My first choice of wood was a piece of Buckeye Burl from woodcraft. I picked up the kit, bushings, and drill bits from there too. Unfortunately the 12.5 mm drill bit was bad. The bit is ground down to 7/16 but the ground down shoulder was not concentric to the bits brad point. It could be seen when rolling the bit on a flat surface. I returned it to the store for another, which appeared to do the same thing. I asked if they had a drill press or lathe that the bit could be chucked up in to see if it wobbled, but they said they didnt have any plugged in... It was the only bit they had in the store and didnt look as bad as the first one. So I took it.... it was worse than the first one.

I grabbed another piece of wood and tried using a 31/64 drill bit, which is close to 12.5 mm. The bit isnt very sharp, and the piece of wood was not very thick and as a result the bit nearly blew thru the side of the blank. They say third time is a charm so... I took a piece of Spalted Pecan and started by drilling a 3/8 hole then a 31/64. Anyhow I hope you all like it.

Very nice work on that pen. Photo work is also outstanding. I think I see some dust specs on the black glass, or is it reflections from lights? I always spot the dust in the photo and not before I take the pic. Now using spray air in a can prior to shot.

Way to go toughing it through the frustrating bits. Tempting sometimes to give up one when nothing is working. Good thing you didn't - that pen is beautiful! Love the spalted pecan, very cool.

The gift box I had ordered came in the mail yesterday... Figured I would post a few pictures of the pen in the box.

Very nicely put together. The pen looks really good with that blank too. The box really show cases the pen.
