This is my first cartridge pen. I used a 300 Win Mag, a slimline kit and some mule deer antler.

Lynn,
I've been a dentist for 28 years, so my opinion is totally useless on that subject! [:D] Actually, yes it is smelly, but the dust collector whisks it away. FYI, if you don't have a dc yet, aim a small fan to blow across your lathe, and that helps a great deal. Just remember to vacuum the mess more often than I did when I used this method.

Cause this is not the "Critiques" forum and we don't want to get busted! [:D]

From the appearance it looks like a copper nib and clip is used.
I have had the lighting place tricks where the components "look" like copper.
Is that what is different?
Where's you get the kit?

William, that is a good looking pen. I like the casing pen combined with antler. The casing looks dull, did you use anything to clean it? Brasso, nev-r-dull, rubbing compound? It could be the shine from the tip may make it look that way. Also did you use a finish on either part?

Eagle, I just received an email from Ernie at Beartoothwoods advertising their copper kits. http://www.beartoothwoods.com/CopperPens.htm

The copper plated kits look real nice and I like the concept, but can't help but think they will wear worse than 24K.. just emailed Ernie for an answer on that...

Griz and Eagle,

This was made with one of Ernie's new copper plated kits that he sent me to try. I asked him the same question and he is consulting with Berea for an answer. I feel this might be a good seller for cartridge pens as well as antler pens. Since I live in a deer hunting area, I am hoping so! [:D]

Pastor Bill,

I would prefer powder coating for the cartridge, but have not made that particular plunge just yet, as the new drill press and new bandsaw (TOOL GLOAT!!) spent lots of my hobby money. This particular cartridge, I looked at it, and then at my little tub of TSW, and said "Why not?" It is just hand buffed with the TSW.

BTW, for those who wonder who Ernie is, check Griz's post above for a link.

Now for a word about the durability of the platings: The copper plating is
much more durable than the standard gold platings. It will not wear off like
the gold plating does. It is not as durable as the titanium platings, but
somewhere in between the two. All of the copper plated pieces have been
treated to resist tarnishing, but if/when that protective layer has worn
away, they may develop a patina like a penny depending on the environment
they are used in.

My father-in-law has had a copper plated pen for over 2 months and it still
looks like new (to compare, he had a standard gold plated pen for 3 weeks
and had worn the plating completely away).

Nice job william, I like the copper look as well. I would prefer my 300 Mag with...
165 gr. SPBT, with 70 gr. of IMR4350, but if you want to put a ball point
in there instead, that's your choice. [:D]

I like the copper too! Powdercoating is the way to go. I actually place the casings on the lathe once they have been drilled and tubed. I sand them with 240 and then 400 grits to smooth them out. Then I use the first two sheets of MM and buff with High Polish buffing compound. They are like glass. Then powdercoat them. The powdercoating process makes them hard as a rock. Very easy too.
