Here are some pens that my 10 year old son and I have made recently. First I'll show his. Aside from the 1st pen, the others were gifts for his friends at school.

The first photo is the first pen he ever made, from zebrawood.
The 2nd photo is the pen he entered in the Birthday Bash youth contest. It was his second pen and was made from yellowheart.
The 3rd photo is another pen made from zebrawood.
The 4th photo is a pen made from purpleheart.

As you can see, he likes cove cuts and he works mostly with a detail gouge. So far I've prepared the blanks and then he does all of the turning, finishing, and pen assembly. We do a simple finish, just sand down to 400 grit and use Perfect Pen Polish. I'm going to try CA at some point but we haven't gotten there yet.

And here are a few that I've made recently. They are also slimlines with a simple finish.

The 1st one is made from Bubinga
The 2nd one is made from Goncalo Alves
The 3rd is made from Cherry. I can see that this one has a few minor issues.
I turned away a little too much at the nib end and the wood doesn't quite match the nib. I guess this would be the opposite of "proud" (embarassed?)
Also, there was some discoloration at the ends, which I think came from the bushings. Oh well, my wife liked it, so it's hers now.

The 4th pen is made from blue PVC from Bruce119. I had a lot of fun turning
PVC and have made 3 pens with it so far. It's a little hard to cut and you have
to keep your tools sharp but it turns and polishes very nicely. I wet sanded it with
micromesh and then used plastic polish. The finished pen feels very solid
and this is my new carry pen. This particular one is blue PVC with satin silver hardware.

I thinking the sons pens would be a might harder to sand through the grits:eek: He certainly likes thinking outside the box on design....very cool!!! And some nice gifts!!!

All in all, some fine turnings you done....keep them coming(and keep that young fella out there with ya)!!!!!!

Thanks Mike and Scott. Also, I figured
out what the deal was with the pens turning
too small on the ends. I inspected the bushings
and they were badly worn (insert your best Homer Simpson
impression here - "Doh!"). I bought a new set
and took a picture of old vs. new, see attached.
I may try some Delrin bushings for the next pen we make
from a light colored wood like cherry. I'm also going
to break out the calipers and start using them to
finish the ends rather than turning to the bushings.
