This was a special request - my brother's house (thatched roof) caught alight sometime last August and he wanted to give pens made from the poles used in the roof construction to some of the guys who helped putting it out. I didn't feel like turning Eucalyptus charcoal (yet). So he brought an old piece of karee that used to be their doorstop on the stoep. I think karee (Rhus lancea) might be called a sumac in other parts of the world. Hard as rock, tough as old biltong (beef jerky) with cracks, holes and voids... Had made enough barrels to fit 11.5 pens before I had 4 acceptable pens assembled - the ends kept on turning white under the CA - I think the wood was too dry already and sucked up moisture from where ever it could. But here they are - too beautiful not to share...
