Turned one of my "seconds" that I can't sell, but just had to see how it looked on a pen. This is the "Smokey Snowflake" pattern. Next on the list is a light box and some decent light.

Yeah, that looks terrible.....What flaw does it have? I think it's great!

Lewis

Thank you sir. There is a spot on the other side where the adhesion to the thread was not what it should be and left an area about an quarter of an inch square that looks like frosted glass.

Terrific Blank Ted.
Most Intriguing Pattern.
Congratulations,
Brian.

Thank you sir. It's called an oriental snowflake in the fishing rod wrapping business and I did a little massaging to make it look smokey. That and I changed up its normal color combination just to make it different.

Thank you all for the compliments on my pen. It is addictive to make the darn things and expensive as can be on a fixed income. By getting in to the wrapping of blanks for my pens I've slowed down considerably on pen production, which slows down on expense, which in turn cuts down on time in the doghouse. :rotfl:

Those pens look fantastic! How long does it take you to make one?

First, thank you. As for how long, it varies and sometimes drastically. It all depends on the type of wrap and pattern I use as to how long it takes. The Snowflake pattern goes relatively quickly. I can do that pattern on the cap in about 5 hours if it's a closed wrap and a little quicker if it's an open wrap. All that means is if the pattern is wrapped until it runs in to itself, it's a closed wrap. An open wrap is one that is done on top of an underwrap that covers the whole tube before doing the decorative wrap. Confusing, but easily understood if I could just do it with pictures. Anyway, long story longer now, I can do each tube in 5 hours or so, so that's about 10 hours of just the wrapping part. Casting and turning are no more than any other blank I suppose. Now that I've gotten back to wrapping after about 40 years away from it, I've finally started getting faster and may be able to step that up to 3 1/2 or 4 hours of wrapping per tube.

I just made a light box today. Here's a couple of much better pictures.
