Cut down a dead holly bush for my sister. Close to the ground the wood looked awfully interesting with whiteish and yellowish at the center.

Pretty wood.

You NEVER know where you'll find usable materials for pens. With some work, I was able to use Byeberry for a pen.

Root ball, and it seems like you were probably right there, creates some extraordinary grain. Beautiful work!

Nice! Did the finish darken it, or is it stained, or do I need a new monitor? I always thought holly was a light colored wood.

Not stained, that's the natural color. It does look a little darker in the photo than it really is.

American Holly is quite white. Ornamental hollies, and there are at least a dozen varieties, have medium to dark coloring. That one looks like a Japanese holly, but I can be fooled.
