I started this yesterday but it wasn't happy so I gave it the rest of the day off.
This morning the shoushan stone was acting better.
This pen is made of REAL stone-----Shoushan Stone
This stone came from Tibet

Good job...
Is that the stone they sell in the malls at Christmas...?
They usually have lights or candles in them...
How did it drill and did it dull the tools much...?
Thanks

I would guess most of the stone your are seeing at the malls is Marble of some sort.
I bought some diamond drills that should be used with water---I was just playing around yesterday and drilled this blank dry and slow.

John that's the bigg problem----I like them more than the buyers do.
Kinda the reason I don't really make these anymore. That and shipping stone around the world thru a couple middle men was killing my wallet.

The white material I used for banding------Alt Ivory from my friend Ed Brown.
Super nice material to work with-----makes a cushion for the stone.

Karin I have turned a couple dozen stone pens-----the most expensive one I ever made ended up as gift to a friend. No one wanted to pay for it so I gave it away.

Ken ---you wouldn't of caught me out driving in that weather either.
I still have one big block of stone left---it's been sitting on my desk for a long time now.

Beautiful Job Gary! I've turned a couple out of some soapstone I got from NewLondon88. The drilling was not too bad but the turning was tough. It ate carbide like I was trying to turn a file. The sandpaper hardly touched it. I'll have to give it another go with some ceramic cutters.
