When I have made my previous segment pen from wenge and ash I found interesting property of ash - its areas with cut along grain shines.

I have made segmented pen from ash.

My wife called it chessboard. :)

I never thought that so simlpe wood as ash may look so interesting.

There is layers ~3 mm tick (0.1 in) and roation between layers is 45 degrees.

Maybe pen will be more interesting, if use thin layers (1mm, 1/25 in) and less angle (for example 30 degrees).

I haven't done much segmenting, just not enough time or patience. I guess. That one looks pretty good. Ash can surprise you. Here's one I cut the blanks out of a board right beside where a large knot went through. I've done a few others cut out the crotch area with the same effect. Get it from the right spot and it can be nice looking wood.
