SF is blessed with a vibrant community of Asian chef-restaurant owners.
One of my chef friends commissioned this quartet of rice pens - requesting subtle tones.
Steps:
Brown rice poured into a silicone candy mold
Colored with (my favorite lightfast) Dr. PH Martin's Hydrus Fine Art Watercolors
Heat gun dried at about 400 degrees
Slice of the Moon brand mica pigment added, then brought up into Douglas and Sturgess clear casting PR
Hand dyed Habotai silk glued onto brass tubes with Mod Podge gloss glue, dried at 150 degrees F in the toaster oven
Tubes placed in SlimLine molds, filled with resin/rice
Pressure cast at 50psi
Turned, then CA finished to seal the exposed rice

She likes them.
Her Italian chef friend wants Arborio rice (risotto) pens - stay tuned

Happy Sunday to all - Bob

Bob, you may have just found a new niche market for custom pen blanks.

Those were gorgeous and hope to see more of those in the future.

Sincere thanks, Elwin.

I've just started the Arborio rice (risotto) pens - this rice is remarkably thirsty - seems to suck up these (lightfast and highly saturated) Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow fabric paints - seen here just after heat gunning to fix the colors:

Next step will be to vacuum stabilize them in Cactus Juice, then cast in Alumilite just to keep things interesting.

I'll keep you posted.

Intriguing Pen, Bob,
I expect that a series of Pasta Pens will shortly appear on the Menu.
Congratulations on continuing to stretch confines of Conventional Materials, and Producing Very Interesting and Exciting Pens.
Brian.

Heartfelt thanks for the kind words, Brian.

I enjoy these little adventures.

When I corresponded with Australian jazz guitar/steel guitar legend Bruce Clarke (Melbourne) about steel guitar (up to his passing in 2008), he said "there's no perfect steel guitar tuning - just a lot of wonderful ones". That stuck with me. I miss his wonderful site: http://www.cumquatrecords.com.au. His son kept it going for as long as possible. Bruce also said "jazz is never telling the same beautiful story twice" - pure genius.

Thanks again.
