This is the first pen that I had to cut the blanks, drill, etc....It's made from a piece of Red Oak, then finished by Poly dipping.

Nice going, Ken! It looks like red oak, and I like the shape. The finish looks good, dipping mmm?

I cut a lot of my blanks. Woods like oak, maple, cherry, walnut, and sometime exotics that buy in larger pieces. Cheaper.

Thanks for the encouragement! I think it will definately be cheaper by cutting my own blanks, etc...I finish alot of my pens by dipping. I use the Minwax quick-drying poly, cut in 1/2 with paint thinner, dipped, helicoptered, and hung to dry. I found that by thinning the poly. I still get a nice tough shine, but it does'nt have that "heavy" look to it. I'm still experimenting.....I should specify....I use the polyurethane, but just bought a can of the water based polycrylic to try. My first use of it was'nt impressive...way too thick. I'll try "cutting" it with water next time.
