My sister brought over a tree that had died in her yard - no idea what kind it was. It wasn't very big and one day while mowing the yard, she had backed into it and broke it off. It was so small that I thought it was just a branch off of a tree, but she said no, it was the whole tree.

She liked the purple color in the wood and wondered if I could build anything from it. It's about 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" diameter at most, if that.

I cut a piece of it into strips to try and get as much purple as I could.

Then I cut those into pen blank sizes.

Glued them up, and then drilled them out.

I wasn't sure how to cut the wood to get the blanks, so I just took a stab at it. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm very much a novice. Anyway, I put it on the mandrel and turned the blanks.

And here is the finished pen:

Looking at the pictures I can see where I need to work it closer to the bushings. It's not as "purpley" as I had hoped it would be, but she was pleased with it anyway.

Very nice coloration on blanks !! Looks like a Sand Hill Cherry, and may darken with age. I am sure your sister is happy that you were able to bring back to life the tree that she ran over. Jim S
