I salvaged and cut up a root ball a few weeks back and had a little stubby piece that I threw in with some other things I was stabalizing... wow, the little stub ended up being a keeper!

I used a Compson clicker because it was the best thing I had on hand for this length of a blank. There's a related discussion about what pen kit would have been good for this size blank over in the pen turning forum:
