I didn't engrave it, I had it engraved. I'm actually not 100% happy with the engraving...the folks at the award shop said they couldn't engrave the image any bigger because the piece was so small, and too small to use the rotary deal on their engraver. I'll most likely go elsewhere next time...

You could try sending it to someone with a laser.

I watched CaptG do some for Buzzzz4, and the pens turned out great.

Chances are that an award shop isn't set up for something as small as pens because they specialize in awards.

IIRC, there are vendors on this site who do laser engraving.
