Just playing with shapes on slimlines. Using Walnut cutoffs laying around in the shop. I guess it is normal for the band to not be flush with the pen parts, even when flush with the bushings when turned.

Nice job, Richard! Yes, bushings are not exact. On slimlines you can do a test fit of the centerband. For other kits you will probably want to invest in calipers or a micrometer.
