Made this Jr Gent tonight, just got the urge to make some sawdust before
I went home.

I cut up some cocobolo planks and got a lot of gold, tan, brown, black and
some purple. But this one has pink in it, too. I've never seen that before.
Need to get the blank squared better, got a little space in the top half..
with my eyesight, I can tell this until I get it home, photograph it and
blow it up in Photoshop. Ok, so I need new eyes, too.

WOW! - what a beautiful piece of wood, and fit and finish looks great!

Thanks! I was hoping the pink would come out more, but it isn't showing up
in the photo. and I've been working on the CA, trying to find what works
best for me. I tried cleaning the wood with accelerator first, (suggested in
this forum) and that worked just great.

Would you mind going into a bit of detail on how you got that amazing finish.

Awesome Pen.

Awesome Pen.

Thanks .. not that much to the finish, really. I sanded to 1500 with wet/dry sandpaper. I sanded dry. Then I wiped it down with denatured
alcohol, then I sprayed a little accelerator on the rag and gave it another
wipe.

I use these little things for eye makeup I found at the store. It's a little foam pad on a stick, and I "chase" the medium CA down the pen. I'll put
the CA directly on the moving blank (lathe on slow) and hold the makeup
applicator against the blank and follow the CA bottle to the other end.
That way I get a fairly thick coat, but I can level it before it cures.

I think I used 5 thick coats of medium on this one. Maybe 6 coats. I forget.
But after that I use a felt block and 400 grit to level out the CA. At that
point I'm just looking for any high spots and I bring them down.

Once the high spots are gone, I put the lathe on high speed and start with
the MicroMesh up to 12,000. Then I give it a quick buff with Tripoli and
another one with Novus2 plastic polish. Lately I've been putting on a coat
of Renaissance Wax so it doesn't get fingerprints. Easy finish, and it takes
longer to wait for CA to dry than it does to apply and sand.

That is a great piece of wood. The depth you achieved especially in the cap is stunning. Nice finish on that one and it looks like you found a method that works.

BEAUTIFUL FINISH!! I have never used Ca or BLO as a finish......I guess I should look into it and how to apply it because your pen has the look of a long lasting finish
