Here is something else you can turn on your mandrel. These sell very well in our area, but these are already sold down in Tennessee. One is Camo Laminate and the other is Cocobolo.

OOPS!! For those who are not hunters, they are game calls. Mostly for bird (duck, goose), but you can put in other reeds that you can use for predator hunting (coyote, etc).

I buy all of my reeds and lanyards (and some wood) from HUT products. They are specialists in the call department. I do see now that CSUSA carries these things as well, and it looks just like the HUT stuff so it is probably supplied by them.

I don't buy the predrilled wood, but if you dont have a 3/4" and 1/2" drill bits you might consider it. The adapter for the mandrel is made up of rubber bushings that slide down the mandrel and uses the same nut. When you slide your wood over the bushings and tighten the nut, it compresses the rubber and fastens the wood to the mandrel. Simple but effective.

The instructions come with the mandrel adapter kit. You can be as creative as you like with these and they sell quite well. I only have one left in my stock from about 35. The reeds are pretuned, so you don't have to know how to use them to make them (thank goodness!!)

Just remember when choosing finishes for calls that they will be used in all kinds of adverse conditions and often placed in people's mouths for extended periods of time and....forget what I said...they're no different than pens!!!

Hey Bill---Just curious---what finish do you use on the calls. I've only made one thus far for my son---actually he's in Idaho right now hunting (we both live in Washington)---Anyway just curious about what the best finish is for calls.

Hi Tom,

I use Tung Oil and then let it dry for a few days, then use a spray lacquer for the final few finishes....so far, so good. I have a Cocobolo one I made a couple of years ago still in use by a good friend. He hasn't complained about the finish yet even though I know he has used and abused it quite a bit.

I will see him next week some time and ask him how it is holding up.

I got a couple of deer call kits a few weeks ago, but haven't started them yet. I was thinking of using a CA finish, does anyone know if this is safe once it is cured?

Thanks.

Hi Bill (bnosie)

CA is very safe once dried. They use if for surguries and to stitch people up (a pure and sterile version). In fact, a couple of years ago I cut two of my fingers with a chisel. The hospital just glued me back together instead of stitching....worked real good and left very little scar.
