I call these "Old Hickory" because I cut the blanks from a broken splitting maul handle that has been in my tool shed for 20 years.

These are about the 6th set I've made.

BTW, PSI's dedicated pen chuck works great with blanks not very square and even.

How hard w/ that Hickory? I have a Hickory shovel handle that was my dads that broke a few weeks ago. I have debated some pens out of it but was concerned it would be a rock.

It could just be the looks of it, but the bottom one (pencil if im remembering correctly) looks like you used a CA finish but sanded through it back down to the wood in a few places.

Like I said I could easily be wrong, and I probably am.

It must be the light. Finish: 600 grit, magic eraser, 0000 steel wool, Shellawax. After a couple of hours I put them back on the mandrel and hit them with carnuba wax and buffed with a microfiber towel.
