Hi all, new here after lurking a bit. After many years of non-turning woodworking, I got a lathe this past Christmas and thought I'd try making a pen.

Here's my first go at it, with a "Patriot" pen kit from Rockler. If you can tell me what the wood is, I'd be obliged, because I got it with a bunch of other interesting blanks from the garage sale of a local turner.

Thanks for all the good info on pen turning - the articles on BLO/CA finishing are outstanding! And thanks for looking.

Welcome to the IAP. Nice pen you made there. I would have to say you have some Cocobolo wood and that stuff ain't all that cheap.

Thanks for the welcome and kind words, and the info on the wood. I will have to keep my eye out for more, as it was very nice to turn (although a little smelly) and I like the grain figure.

Nice pen Bill. Make sure you wear a dust mask especially with cocobolo. I learned the hard way and this advice applies with any other wood you turn!
