Thank you Laurie for the inspiration. I have a lot of BIG (at least 80 years old) of Southern long leaf pine trees in my yard. I used to burn the cones. Imagine that.

Yep, the cones I used are about 6 to 8 inches long but I could only get one good size blank out of one cone. the pics are of one pen. I wanted everyone to see how the colors and the eyes wrap around the pen. Very unique. I'm going to try a wasp waisted slimline but I may turn off all the interesting stuff to get it right. I have hundreds of these things. We always burned them.

no stabilizing that I am aware of. The cones are dry. Once you get the seed pods off it's just like a dry wood blank. Turns, sands great. You will have some voids to fill with CA but nothing special. I used a CA finish on it.
