For aeons, the dragon staff Nar Abara (literally: Fire Spear) has lain
dormant, becoming little more than a legend. The world is once again
threatened by the power of the great wyrm, manifesting itself in the
form of Starfire and his minions. Awakened by this threat, Nar Abara
has returned and seeks a new hero to imbue with blessed power and save
the world.

Hand formed by ancient artisans of Egyptian ebony and hand cast
resins, Nar Abara holds not only the power to unleash fiery
destruction upon her foes, but also to record the heroic story of her
existence. She has survived many battles with the forces of fire and
darkness, always emerging victorious and more powerful. Her battered
headpiece leads many to believe that her power has waned, but any
foolish enough to strike have only moments to regret their foolishness
before being immolated.

I had a friend challenge me to make an anime themed pen a while back. I have some other friends who own a miniatures company. They are releasing a new game next month at GenCon, so I made them a pen based on one of their models.

This was my first closed end pen.

Great job matching the game item, Jason. Looks like a lot of time went into that!

More than I like to think about. I took a bronze fire blank from Exotic Blanks, cut it in half and glued it up to make a square. It was a bit off in shape because I tried to match the pattern across the seam. It worked reasonably well.

I cut the main shape out on the scroll saw, then used a dremel to rough it in. I turned the main body of the pen up to the first acrylic segment. Then I glued the tip on with a tenon to stabilize it in the tube and borrowed a chuck to turn the interface.

Then I spent a couple weeks sanding all the top and the interface to get the final shape. I wish I had taken a couple pictures 90 degrees off because I carved a slight dragon head into the headpiece in the other axis.

Finally I put a CA finish over the whole thing and spent another day sanding and polishing that.

In the end, it came out well, but was way too much effort. It is in the mail now, so hopefully they will enjoy it.

The main shaft is african blackwood with a piece of crossgrain bocote for the grip where the original was wrapped leather. The red "gem" on the cap is a segment of bloodwood.

The hardware is an executive rollerball set from CSUSA. I am pretty impressed with the quality of the parts for the price.
