Mystery wood Wall St pen

This wood was given to me by my parents after a trip to Alaska. They were in far North Eastern Alaska and were given a burl to bring back to me.

Does anyone have any clue what the wood may be?

It turned smoothly and finished easily and I thought it turned out to be a decent looking pen.

It sure looks like Maple to me. A very interesting grain there! I like it.

Looks like it has some nice curl in it. I'm thinking a Western Maple, but i'm not an expert by any means.

Did it have a cedar like smell when turned ? Likely Alaska cedar - also called yellow cedar or yellow cypress .

That is some nice looking grain - too bad you don't know what it is, so you can order more!

How did you do the fish?

The fish was laser etched by a local business.

There was not a cedar smell when I was turning the pen. thanks for the ideas...I'll try and do a little more research to see if any of those woods seem to match.
