Not necessary, I have some Lignum that has pronounced straight grain, however within the grain there are the traditional scattered grains.

Here is another test, if you wiped it down with Acetone or DNA did the pad have any greenish tint?

I am by no means a wood genius, but based on the pic I see that the lower barrel also has more of a reddish brown tint with also leads me away from Lignum. From the pieces I have seen Lignum is more lighter in color.

I was going to say some kind of Kingwood. But It might be amyris balsamifera, which is known as West Indian Sandalwood.
The oil of the tree is used for many things, which is known as West Indian Sandalwood oil. Highly flammable by the way.

Dan, Not all Lignum is green.

Some of it is brownish in color as well

To the original poster, did you have an issue with the blo/ca, or did it go on easily.
Such as, did you wipe it with acetone or alcohol first in orer to make the ca work?

I agree 100% the last stuff I turned was a pale yellowish color no green at all, BUT when I wiped it down I noticed that my paper towel has a green residue on it. The wood was not green but the towel was. It was very very strange.

Here are a couple pens I turned from genuine lignum vitae (Guaiacum officinale), heartwood and sap/heartwood mix. Freshlly cut, the heartwood is brown, and turns greenish after exposure to UV. (similar to Palo Santo in that regard)
