Sent to me by David (Pasho). When I was at the Calgary Wood Show this month I showed theses blanks around and the consensus I got was that it could be Brown Mallee Burl.

What do you guys and gals think?

Dressed in a Gold Round Top 8mm Euro Premium Twist Ballpoint. Sealed with Med CA slury, sanded to 12,000 MM, applied 6 coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Poly and finished with 2 protective coats of Brazilian Carnauba Wax.

As always comments and or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks for looking.

I honestly don't know what kind of wood it is... just wanted to say you did a beautiful job on the fit and finish!! It's a wonderful pen.

I think I would second the lace sheoak .. but it's just a guess.
Some of mine has that lacewood pattern to it, and some of it
doesn't have it at all. I wouldn't have guessed mallee though.
Mine isn't as orange, either .. but then one of yours is and one
isn't, so who knows?

And I forgot to mention the pen .. wonderful work.
I forget to say that because with Les, wonderful is
pretty much a given.. those pens always shine.

What ever the wood (I have my doubts even about sheoak) your fit and finish sure made a beautiful pen. I personally like those pen kits.

Some of the Aussie woods can fool you at to their true identity. Most being from the Eucalyptus family and all. I import a lot of Aussie burl and I can tell you that the second one is definitely not Lace Sheoak. I have about 350 lbs of it here and none of it looks like that.

With that being said, sometimes it is hard to tell from a pen blank sized sample....But, here goes...

The top one could be Brown Mallee....or maybe Gimlet Burl. Gimlet often exhibits the open gum pockets, while Brown Mallee does not. The color looks right from the pic to be Gimlet.

The second one could be Coolibah Burl. I have some that has that same narrow eye pattern and about the same color.

If I could smell it, I could tell you if the top one is Gimlet or not...........

(Remember Al Boreland and Tim Taylor on Tool Time/Home Improvement ,where Al was identifying different species of wood by smell while he was blindfolded!!!!!)

I've got four coolibah burl blanks here and none of them look like that.
To be fair, none of them look like each other, either.
That's one of those woods that can look all sorts of ways depending on
.. well .. anything.

The only reason I know they're coolibah is that the person who sent them
to me wrote it on the blanks. Otherwise, I'd never have known they were
the same species.

I know what you are talking about. Most of the figuring in the Coolibah that I have on hand is the solid, swirling eye pattern. But, I have some smaller Coolibah burls that have an elongated smallish cat's eye void and is of a slightly orange-yellow color.

Ya just never know! Whatever it really is, Ya gotta love that burl!!!!!

An absolutely beautiful finish on the pen. Whatever the wood is you've done a fine job of showing it off. I'm leaning toward Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle, Tasmanian Eucalyptus Burl or possibly Lace Sheoak.
