Thanks all. I didn't know whether to have the spalt lining up with the nib retracted or not

Nice work, Keith. I agree with the solution you decided on in that I try to line up grain when the nib is retracted, or in the case of capped pens, the pen is capped closed.

thanks for that. i've about 70 spalted beech blanks but there is only a handful that will turn with the spalt still on it as it seems to only be on the edges or outside of the blank:(:(

Pitty , in that case , IMHO , best to go to a fatter pen . But I'm sure you sorted that out for yourself . Beautiful wood Keith ! [8D]
