I wanted to try my hand at making my own blank today so I went about and made one with four types of wood: Sapele, Wenge, Maple, and Cherry (I will post pics on how I did this in the Blanks forum).

Anyway, the bottom blew apart while turning. I think there was a gap in the segmentation, but I digress.

Yesterday I screwed up the bottom of another pen. So a bit of thought and I was able to combine them:)

The top is nothing to write home about. Just wanted to experiment. The bottom is Wenge.

Nice save.

Blown blanks happens to all of us

Thanks. I do a lots of inlays for other projects. Never had to do one for a blank before. The jig I made makes it super easy and safe to do. I just needed to bang the inlays in a bit to make sure there were no air gaps. The gouge caught on a gap and ...bang! went to never never land.
