Today my brother in law and I attended the Wisconsin Chapter of the IAP's "Turning for troops."

The whole thing was pretty amazing! Jeff of woodcraft spent an hour or so helping me find a few pieces of equipment that I still needed for finishing my shop. (Man I wish I had the funds for one tenth of what I saw today)

Back in the shop Sandy spent the next couple hours literaly holding our hands helping us get the A,B,C,D's and then with the help of the rest of the guys John, Dave, and others we both successfully finished our first pens!

Lessons learned:
My ryobi lathe is no where near the quality of the Jet midi that we were using.
Label the back of your sand paper right after you cut it you will forget the grit.
My Harbor freight chisels still need to be sharper and with a longer handle.
Prepared blanks don't necessarily have the brass tube preinstalled.
Micro mesh is pretty cool
The heat from friction polishing will also polish your fingers if there is any polish on them.
All the turners there were super helpful in answering questions and teaching a couple of noobs.
Turners have a weird sence of humor.
There are world class turners right here in my back yard only 15 min way

I wish I took a picture of the pile of pens to be shipped out!

Thanks guys we will be back

:) Hey Timothy, I enjoyed reading your observations. Turning pens for the troops is very rewarding. I actually got a thank you email on one of my pens and that was really cool!
