So 3 months ago I decided to make a segment pen to test all my acquired skills in segmenting up to now. I set about coming up with a very complicated idea where the segments would form a basic "X" pattern. Only I didn't want them to form an "X". I wanted one side to appear as if the ovals were under- and over-lapping one another and on the other side, form somewhat of any eye shape.
The wood I wanted to use was one that has NEVER remained whole through to finish. Buckeye Maple Burl. Eyes fall out, entire barels split and fly off, and wood tends to crumble. THEN, I wanted a contrasting but related wood...Birdseye Maple. Very hard, very dense wood that by itself is fine to turn...just hard as heck. So we had a crazy segment design with a brittle unpredictable wood segmented right next to that. But wait....there's more! Then I decided I wanted to put aluminum slices in between every piece.
3 months later, here she is!:smile-big:

Scott, that is a great piece of burl and your segments look very sharp and clean. I personally would have used a different wood for contrast. I am sure it looks better in person, however it seems too muted.

In either case, you like it and it is an accomplishment for you! So well done and cannot wait for your next challenge.

Yes, it contrasts a bit more in person....stupid crappy camera. But I didn't want too much color contrast though. Trompe L'oeil is something I have been interested in for a LONG time. I like the way you see something one way at first glance, then after a few seconds, you start to see things differently. The segments contrast juuuuuuuust enough to where they are not that noticeable from about 10 feet away, but the closer you get, you notice them....closer still and you catch the glint from the aluminum.
I really love it when I lay it down on a table in front of some folks that know me for making pens, and I just walk off and listen. This one I heard "Oh, wow, that's some crazy acrylic" PAUSE "Oh, wait, that's WOOD!" "No it's not....Scott is this wood?" I say nothing. Don't even turn to acknowledge the question. "Oh no....it's 2 woods and........is that...........metal?" I just walk over, pick up the pen and thank them all for helping me, smile and walk away.
