My neighbor is a custom cabinet maker and woodworker for very high end homes in Denver. He sometimes buys salvaged wood from a supplier back east. Recently he brought me a piece of white oak which he says had been retrieved from the mud beneath a bridge destroyed during the Civil War era. The wood is black and extremely hard. It turned OK, roughing it out with a sharp gouge. Don't know what kind of a gouge it is but it was sharp. I finished it with carbide. There were no chips, rather just a very fine dust which my dust collector removed quite well. The only finish is three coats of Tung oil. I wanted a little bit of a coarser finish. Wanted it to look like more like raw lumber. I will use it for a carry pin because I like the Vertex Click.
